St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Tyler O'Neill (27) Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals are parting ways with slugger Tyler O’Neill in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

There was no immediate word on what the Cardinals will receive in return.

O’Neill looked like a budding star as recently as 2021 when he hit .286 with 34 home runs and finished eighth in NL MVP voting. Since then, his offense has regressed significantly, and he hit just .231 with nine home runs in 72 games for the Cardinals in 2023. He also seemed to wear out his welcome with the team early in the campaign.

The Red Sox will hope for a return to form as he enters his final season of arbitration. The move should also work for O’Neill, who will get a year to prove himself before he becomes eligible for free agency next winter.
