The Boston Red Sox rotation's inability to go deep into games has hampered the entire pitching staff all season.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora continues to play chess on a nightly basis to weave his way through each game, which often requires roster moves to keep arms fresh.

That trend continues heading into Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

"The Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss from Triple-A Worcester," MLB.com's Ian Browne reported. "To make room on the active roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter to Worcester following last night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles."

Weiss has thrown four scoreless innings for the WooSox this season but has less-than-stellar numbers on the year.

The 31-year-old has a 5.44 ERA with a 56-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .278 batting average against and 1.69 WHIP in 41 1/3 innings at Triple-A in 2023.

The veteran was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels before being acquired by the Red Sox late last month. He has three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings at the big-league level this season and a career 5.79 ERA in 18 2/3 innings.

Weiss features a fastball that averages 94 mph as well as a cutter and slider. He'll provide short-term depth until it's time for yet another transaction in a few days.
