Red Sox announcer, Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley blasts Pirates during broadcast

It was learned earlier this month that longtime Boston Red Sox television color commentator and Hall-of-Famer Dennis Eckersley will be retiring at the end of the current season.

Eckersley clearly won't be going quietly into the figurative night.

As noted by Justin Terranova of the New York Post, Eckersley blasted the roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates during the broadcast of Tuesday's game between the Buccos and Red Sox that Boston won 5-3.

"You talk about a no-name lineup. There’s no team like this," Eckersley said of the Pirates, who began Wednesday afternoon at 45-71 and with the fourth-worst record in all of MLB. "This is a hodgepodge of nothingness. It’s ridiculous. It really is."

The Red Sox ultimately jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the second inning of Tuesday's contest. "It’s ridiculous. It really is. Pathetic," Eckersley added about the Pirates at that time.

According to Spotrac, the Pirates are 28th out of 30 clubs in payroll totals for the 2022 season. ESPN notes that Pittsburgh is 27th in attendance and is averaging 16,035 fans per home game this summer.

Terranova explained the Pirates are in the middle of a 194-306 run, so one really can't blame would-be attendees for catching games at home either on television or through radio broadcasts. The Pirates last made the playoffs in 2015.
