The Boston Red Sox hit a new low after getting shelled by the Kansas City Royals in their 9-3 loss at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. Fortunately, a couple of the pitchers that were dominated by the Royals' putrid offense are no longer on the big-league roster.
"Several Red Sox roster moves today: Per source, Red Sox are selecting Kyle Barraclough," MassLive's Christopher Smith tweeted Wednesday. "He’ll be added to the active roster. Brandon Walter recalled to Boston. Nick Robertson has been optioned to Worcester, the Red Sox have designated Dinelson Lamet for assignment."
The biggest news in the roster shakeup is the addition of Barraclough -- a once dominant reliever who then pitched his way out of Major League Baseball and has now completed the comeback. The 33-year-old started his season in the Atlantic League and signed with Boston on June 19.
Since then, the veteran has gone 7-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 28-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .181 batting average against and 1.05 WHIP in 42 innings this season for Triple-A Worcester. He's been used as a starter in all 12 games for the WooSox but all 288 of his big-league appearances came out of the bullpen. He'll likely join the parade of bulk relievers this season.
Barraclough will enter the majors with fellow teammate, Walter, who posted a 3.07 ERA in 14 2/3 innings for the Red Sox this season between two stints.
Robertson will head back to Triple-A Worcester as he awaits another opportunity, while Lamet's time in the Red Sox's organization is in jeopardy. The former Cy-Young candidate has had a year to forget and has now been designated for assignment for the third time since last August.
