It sounds like the Boston Red Sox will end up making some roster changes this offseason.

Boston has struggled in each of the last two seasons. The Red Sox haven't won more than 78 games in a season since 2021 and now need to go back to the drawing board. Boston already has hired new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and he will be tasked with fixing the roster this winter.

The Red Sox already have been linked to numerous star free agents who the club could pursue. Some intriguing trade candidates could end up being available, as well. Boston also could end up subtracting from its current roster to open up space. One player who could end up being non-tendered this offseason is catcher Reese McGuire, according to MLB Trade Rumors' Anthony Franco.

Major League Baseball's non-tender deadline is Friday, November 17. The club will have to decide if they want to tender contracts to players with under six years of MLB service time. While many of the players will be tendered contracts, Franco listed McGuire as someone who could end up being non-tendered. When someone is non-tendered, they immediately become a free agent.

Boston currently has Connor Wong penciled in as the club's starter but doesn't have another backup on the big league roster. The Red Sox do have an exciting prospect in Kyle Teel, who could end up making his big league debut in 2024. But, he likely won't be with the big league club on Opening Day.

McGuire was solid in 2023 with a .267/.310/.358 slash line, one home run, and 16 RBIs in 72 games. If the Red Sox were to bring him back in 2023 he likely would continue to be a solid backup until Teel is ready. If Boston opts to let him go, they could find another option in free agency. The Red Sox have a little over two weeks to make a decision.
