Red Sox claim infielder Travis Shaw off waivers from Brewers

The Boston Red Sox have claimed infielder Travis Shaw off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Sunday.

Shaw, who was drafted by the Red Sox in 2011 and played for Boston in 2015 and 2016, shared his excitement about the deal in a Twitter post shortly after the news broke.

Shaw batted .191/.279/.337 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 56 games for the Brewers this season. Milwaukee placed him on outright waivers Saturday.

The 31-year-old provides a left-handed hitting first base option for Boston to complement Bobby Dalbec. He can also play second and third base.

In his two seasons with the Red Sox, he hit  .251/.312/.442 with 29 home runs and 107 RBI in 210 games.

After his two-year stint in Boston, Shaw joined the Brewers from 2017-2019 and spent the 2020 season with the Toronto Blue Jays before returning to Milwaukee for the 2021 campaign.

The Red Sox were 68-51 entering Sunday's contest against the Baltimore Orioles. They are currently second in the American League East, four games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
