The Boston Red Sox are poised to make major additions to their roster this offseason and have been rumored to be pursuing the biggest name in baseball.

Former Red Sox infielder and current NESN broadcaster Will Middlebrooks spoke briefly about Boston's approach to landing Shohei Ohtani, who will be a free agent this winter.

“There’s only so much I can say… they’re (Red Sox) gonna take their chance… that front office right now, at this moment, is trying to find a way to get (Shohei Ohtani)," Middlebrooks said on the “WAKE and RAKE” podcast Friday.

Failing to reach the postseason in 2023 could very well lead to the team going all-in on free agency, as well as the recent firing of chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom.

With a top farm system in baseball, largely thanks to Bloom, as well as strong young core, signing Ohtani to the roster would put Boston in a great spot for years to come.

While the two-way player would be a massive addition to a weakened rotation, his efforts on the mound won't be immediate.

Having recently undergone surgery to repair his UCL, Ohtani won't be able to pitch until 2025 but would add a very valuable bat to a solid Red Sox lineup until then.

There’s no debate that Ohtani would make the roster markedly improved. That said, Boston will have to battle how to best allocate its resources to creep back into contention.
