The Boston Red Sox have been faced with a middle infield roster crunch all season long. The club has a plethora of league-average or worse players, most of which appear to be interchangeable.

With the acquisition of Luis Urías, the Red Sox designated a favorite of the media and fans for assignment, Christian Arroyo. Luckily, despite his solid production over the years, the slugger cleared waivers and is back with the Red Sox organization.

Arroyo will be headed to Triple-A Worcester as he awaits his next opportunity.

The 28-year-old is hitting .244 with 19 extra-base hits including three home runs, 24 RBIs and a .638 OPS in 66 games this season.

His performance has taken a steep hit from his first two full seasons in Boston, when he combined to hit .277 with 41 extra-base hits including 12 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .749 OPS in 144 games between 2021 and 2022.

Arroyo fell down a depth chart that includes Urías, Yu Chang and Pablo Reyes. Upon Trevor Story's return, likely on Thursday, Arroyo will fall one more spot down the rankings. At that point, it's likely that Chang is also designated for assignment, though there's an outside chance he makes the roster over Reyes.
