The Cincinnati Reds have announced that they have signed Trey Mancini to a minor league contract. He played a pivotal role on the 2022 World Series-winning Houston Astros team and then signed a two-year, $14M contract with the Chicago Cubs in the offseason.
Things did not go Mancini’s way while in the Windy City. He slumped to a career-worst .234/.299/.336 slash line with just four home runs and a 70 OPS+. This was rather unexpected, for historically, he has shown the ability to hit for a good batting average with 20-30 home run potential. Eventually the Cubs designated him for assignment. They will remain on the hook for the vast majority of his remaining salary.
Will Trey Mancini get a Big League opportunity with the Cincinnati Reds?
Currently the Reds are chasing the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and are within striking distance of a Wild Card playoff berth. Mancini signed a minor-league deal, but he could work his way up to the big league roster and provide a veteran presence for a young Cincinnati team on which a right-handed hitting first baseman/corner outfielder is a need.
