One of the Blue Jays’ most used relievers is heading to the 15-day IL, as the Blue Jays announced earlier today that right-hander Erik Swanson is going to be missing some time with thoracic spine inflammation after leaving yesterday’s outing. In a corresponding move, the Jays have recalled reliever Jay Jackson from Triple-A Buffalo.

In yesterday’s game against Cleveland, Swanson was brought in the top of the seventh inning to replace Yimi García. The former Mariner retired the first batter before allowing a single to outfielder Myles Straw.

This season, Swanson has been one of the Jays top relief pitchers and currently leads the squad with 60 appearances on the year. Acquired in the offseason in exchange for Teoscar Hernández, Swanson has been used in high-pressure situations and late in games, amassing a 3.10 ERA through 58 innings pitched while striking out opposing batters at 10.4 K/9 clip. His 1.086 WHIP also leads the Jays relief corps.

Coming back to Toronto is Jay Jackson, who has floated between the Triple-A and MLB this season after signing with the organization this winter. Jackson has been a pleasant surprise for the club this season, as the 35-year-old owns a 1.64 ERA through 22 innings, allowing just four earned runs off of 12 hits at the big league level.
