Report: Blue Jays expected to host games in Toronto

It looks like the Toronto Blue Jays will be able to play home games at Rogers Centre when MLB begins its season next month amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Monday that the Blue Jays will arrive in Toronto for spring training on July 1 and expects that they'll host teams.

Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams must sign off on the final MLB plan for the Blue Jays to face teams in Toronto.

Even though the Canadian border is closed to non-essential travel through at least July 21, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opened cities in the country to NHL personnel. Edmonton or Toronto could be chosen to house NHL teams later this week.

The AP story adds MLB teams will be exempt from quarantining for 14 days when they cross the border. Such quarantine guidelines would've forced the Blue Jays to play all "home" contests of their 60-game regular season somewhere in the United States.

The Blue Jays closed their Florida spring training facilities earlier this month due to rising COVID-19 concerns.
