Report: Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina expected to land on IL with knee soreness

Longtime St. Louis Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina will be placed on the 10-day injured list with knee soreness, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.

There is reportedly no definitive timetable for a return to the lineup for Molina, who has dealt with knee soreness throughout the season.

Molina, 39, has seen limited action this season, playing in 38 of the Cardinals' 65 games. He's slashing .213/.225/.294 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 138 plate appearances.

Earlier this week, Molina set the all-time MLB mark for putouts by a catcher, notching No. 14,865 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Molina broke the previous record held by Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, who retired in 2011.

While backup catcher Andrew Knizner will see most of the starts behind the dish in Molina's absence, the Cardinals also plan to look at a top-catching prospect, Ivan Herrera.

Herrera, 22, made his major league debut in May, going 0-1 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 30 games for Memphis, the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, Herrera batted .291/.388/.436 with three home runs and 16 RBI.
