Report: Former All-Star closer Sergio Romo signs with Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are adding a new weapon to their bullpen, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

Romo was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners last week and eventually released. The 15th-year pro compiled a 0-0 record with an 8.16 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 14 1/3 innings pitched with Seattle in 2022, his only year with the club.

The 39-year-old Romo won three World Series titles during his days with the San Francisco Giants from 2008 to 2016 and earned an All-Star appearance in 2013. He has 137 career saves, including 84 with the Giants.

Toronto (40-32) is tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for third place in the AL East and will open a big three-game home series against the second-place Boston Red Sox on Monday night. The Blue Jays current closer is Jordan Romano, who is tied for first in the American League with 17 saves.
