The New York Mets aren't expected to do much in the 2024 season.

After trading away Max Scherzer, David Robertson, Justin Verlander and Mark Canha last season, New York is widely expected to finish third or fourth in the National League East this season.

However, reports already indicate that New York could be extremely active next offseason and this could be a one-year reset.

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today:

The Mets plan to fully to jump into the free-agent market next winter with the likes of Juan Soto, Alex Bregman, Max Fried, Corbin Burnes and Walker Buehler available. Yet, rival teams still believe that All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso won’t be retained, and could be available at the July 30 trade deadline.

That's an alarming report about Alonso, as he's a beloved home grown player, but the sting of losing him could be lessened if the Mets are able to eventually land another slugger in free agency.

Of course, this is all predicated on those players actually getting to free agency as opposed to signing deals with their current franchises. Soto seems certain to test the market given that he's a Scott Boras client who already rejected a long-term extension years ago as a member of the Washington Nationals.

Buehler also seems likely to hit the free agent market given that he's coming back from injury this year and the Dodgers will want to see how he looks. Of all those players listed, Bregman seems the most likely to sign a deal with his current team, as the Astros have already extended Jose Altuve this offseason.
