Report: Luis Castillo's new five-year extension with Mariners includes unique injury clause
Nearly two months after acquiring starting pitcher Luis Castillo at the trade deadline, the Seattle Mariners have locked up the right-hander for the next five seasons.
On Saturday, the Mariners announced an agreement with Castillo on a contract extension running through 2027, with player and club options for 2028.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the extension will pay the two-time All-Star $108 million over five years, with the sixth-year vesting option possibly increasing its worth to $133 million.
Passan added another interesting nugget about the deal. Castillo's new contract, which begins in 2023, includes a unique injury clause. Over the last three years of the contract, if Castillo undergoes Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow, the Mariners will receive a $5 million option for the 2028 season.
Since joining the Mariners, Castillo has earned a record of 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA in nine starts.
Castillo took the loss in his most recent outing against the Oakland A's, allowing four earned runs off six hits through just 4.2 innings pitched.
For the year, Castillo is 7-6 with a 2.85 ERA over 33 starts.
In July, the Mariners traded three of their top five prospects to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Castillo.
