Report: Mets, Carlos Correa could finalize deal before end of week

All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa could finally and officially become a member of the New York Mets before the start of the next workweek.

Jon Heyman and Greg Joyce of the New York Post reported Thursday that Correa could put pen to paper on a deal with the Mets "perhaps even by week’s end" as the two sides continue negotiations. SNY MLB insider Andy Martino also offered an update on the matter via Twitter:

Correa was initially set to join the San Francisco Giants via a 13-year, $350 million deal until the Giants flagged a supposed medical concern regarding his physical. The Mets then swooped in ahead of Christmas to land the 28-year-old thanks to a 12-year, $315 million agreement that hasn't yet been completed because New York doctors experienced similar worries reportedly related to surgery Correa required in 2014 to repair a fractured right fibula and a ligament.

The Post pointed out Correa has never missed MLB playing time due to that setback.

Mets owner Steve Cohen spent hundreds of millions of dollars in offseason moves this past fall before he orchestrated the agreement with agent Scott Boras to acquire Correa on Dec. 21. Heyman and Joyce report that "Boras appears only to be talking to the Mets now" and that the contract terms of $315 million over 12 years "may be unlikely to change much, if at all." Instead, the Mets could look to add language so the deal isn't fully guaranteed in the event Correa spends a specific amount of time on the injured list for a reason linked with the original leg issue.

Mets fans understandably may continue to embrace a "we'll believe it when we see it" mindset as it pertains to Correa's future. The latest reports tease a good thing could come to such individuals who have spent weeks waiting for a final resolution.
