Report: Mets to host Yankees on 20th anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks

It's anybody's guess if the 2020 MLB season will begin or finish in full amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the league is reportedly looking ahead to the 2021 campaign and, notably, one day in particular.

On Tuesday, Newsday's Tim Healey wrote that the New York Mets will host the New York Yankees at Citi Field on Sept. 11, 2021, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed thousands, destroyed the World Trade Center, and impacted families for decades.

As Healey wrote, it's the first time the two New York clubs will play each other on any Sept. 11. MLB will release the 2021 schedule on Thursday.

The Mets played hosts to the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 21, 2001, for the city's first professional sporting event following the attacks. New York catcher Mike Piazza delivered a go-ahead home run in the 8th inning to guide the Mets to an emotional and unforgettable win:

Later that fall, the Yankees lost the 2001 World Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
