Report: MLB to investigate Josh Donaldson's remarks to Tim Anderson
To say that things got heated in the weekend's White Sox-Yankees series is an understatement. While the White Sox already made it clear they don't believe Josh Donaldson's "explanation" of what went down, it sounds like the league may get involved as well.
According to Laura Albanese of Newsday, the league is troubled by Donaldson's comments toward White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson and is investigating the matter.
The Yankees third baseman set the fireworks off after calling the White Sox shortstop "Jackie," which caused a scuffle that made both benches clear. The remark was a reference to Brooklyn Dodgers great Jackie Robinson and comments Anderson made about himself in 2019. White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal reportedly confronted Donaldson about the name-calling in the fifth inning of Saturday's game when the fight broke out.
Donaldson later tried to say his comments toward Anderson were an "inside joke" — a comment that Chicago pitcher Liam Hendriks immediately shut down.
"That's completely inappropriate, and then after hearing what was said after the game, usually you have inside jokes with the people you get along with — not people that don't get along at all," Hendriks told reporters.
New York went on to win that Saturday game 7-5 before Chicago took both games of the Sunday doubleheader, 3-1 and 5-0.
