Report: Pirates calling up top prospect Oneil Cruz

According to multiple sources, the Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted top prospect Oneil Cruz to the majors.

The 23-year-old Cruz is large for a shortstop, standing 6-7 and weighing 220lbs.

In 54 games for Triple-A Indianapolis, Cruz batted .233/.337/.424, with nine home runs and 35 RBI. Cruz is also a threat on the basepaths, stealing 30 bases while being caught just six times in the minors this season.

Cruz played in two major league games in 2021 for the Pirates. He batted .333/.333/.667 with a home run and three RBI in nine plate appearances.

He was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. In 2017, the Pirates acquired Cruz, along with minor leaguer Angel German, for reliever Tony Watson.
