Report: Pirates IF Phillip Evans likely out for year after suffering broken jaw, concussion

The prognosis for Phillip Evans isn't a good one...as expected.

The Pittsburgh Pirates infielder has reportedly suffered a broken jaw and concussion after a violent collision with teammate Gregory Polanco on Saturday, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

On a deep fly ball down the right-field line, Polanco's elbow hit Evans in the head, resulting in the injury. Evans was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to the hospital following the collision.

According to Mackey's sources, it's not believed that Evans will need surgery on his jaw. Given the shortened season and recovery timeline for the injury, it's unlikely he returns in 2020.

Mackey reports that the Pirates intend to call up Jose Osuna on Sunday for the team's series finale against the Detroit Tigers.

Evans was batting .359 with nine RBI and one home run. He was signed as a free-agent minor leaguer this offseason.
