Could Yasiel Puig land with the Red Sox? David Dermer-USA TODAY Sports

Report: Red Sox interested in signing one-time All-Star RF Yasiel Puig

It appears the Boston Red Sox still are attempting to fill the hole left in right field after trading Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason.

While Boston could potentially use outfielder Kevin Pillar and newcomer Alex Verdugo in right field, they could potentially add a heavy bat to their lineup before Opening Day.

The Red Sox are among a handful of teams "mentioned as possibilities" to sign free agent slugger Yasiel Puig, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported Thursday during "MLB Tonight."

Other teams interested in Puig include the San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres, according to Heyman.

Boston currently has Pillar, Verdugo, Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr. and J.D. Martinez on their outfield depth chart. All of those players are more than capable of doing the job, but adding Puig could help give the Red Sox another power bat that they've been looking for.

After spending six years with the Dodgers, Puig spent time with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians last season. The 29-year-old averaged .267 at the plate with 24 home runs, 84 RBI's and a .785 OPS.

If the Red Sox have any plans of adding Puig, they should do so soon as players began training at Fenway Park Friday.

The 2020 season will begin on July 23 or 24 and all signs are pointing towards the Red Sox boasting an outfield of Benintendi, Bradley Jr. and Pillar.
