Report: Yankees interested in Reds' Luis Castillo, Athletics' Frankie Montas

With the 2022 MLB trade deadline a little over a month away, rumors and whispers are already emerging through baseball circles.

Despite having the best record in all of MLB, the New York Yankees reportedly plan to go big-game hunting ahead of the Aug. 6 deadline.

According to Peter Gammons of The Athletic, the Yankees will make a run a several starting pitchers, including Cinncinatti Reds ace Luis Castillo and Oakland A's hurler Frankie Montas.

"On June 20, the Yankees were on a pace for 122 wins. Four of the teams on pace to lose 100 games were scouting the Yankee organization," Gammons wrote. "Why not? They know that while Yankees starting pitchers led the American League in earned run average and WAR, Brian Cashman is going to make a run at Luis Castillo and Frankie Montas."

The Reds have reportedly been open to trading Castillo since the offseason. The New York Mets are the most recent team to be linked to Castillo. The Mets are currently without starters Tylor Megill, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Carlos Carrasco.

In nine starts for the Reds this season, Castillo has a record of 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA. Over 51.0 innings, he's allowed 21 earned runs while posting 49 strikeouts.

Montas' name began floating around in trade rumors in June when word came out that he was "likely to be moved" by the trade deadline. The Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins have shown interest in the A's right-hander.

In 15 starts for the A's, Montas has a 3-7 record with a 3.21 ERA. In 89.2 innings, Montas has a 92 to 22 strikeout to walk ratio.
