Report: Yankees sign first-round pick Trey Sweeney

The New York Yankees have put pen to paper on a deal with who they hope will be their next great shortstop.

Per Bryan Hoch of the MLB website, Trey Sweeney and the Yankees have agreed to a deal said to be worth $3 million. The Bronx Bombers selected the product of Eastern Illinois in the first round of this year's draft after he slashed .382/.522/.712 with 14 home runs across 48 games this season. He earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors for his production.

According to David Lazar of the New York Post, the Yankees could ultimately move the 21-year-old to a different position in the infield, such as third base. Per the Post's Dan Martin, Sweeney was rated the 55th best player in his draft class by MLB Pipeline.

Yankees vice president of domestic amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer said last week he envisions Sweeney playing shortstop.

"He's smooth, he's got good hands, he runs well enough," Oppenheimer explained. "His range is good, and he's got a plus arm. So realistically, he has all the tools and the intangibles to be a shortstop. Defensively, we don't see any issues why he wouldn't stay there."
