Report: Yankees trade right-hander Adam Ottavino to Red Sox

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have not completed a trade since 2014, when they swapped Stephen Drew and Kelly Johnson. However, the American League East rivals made another trade on Monday.

According to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler, the Yankees traded Adam Ottavino to the Red Sox for salary relief. The right-hander is scheduled to earn $8 million in 2021.

Ottavino has a 3.53 career ERA, but he struggled during the pandemic-shortened season. The 35-year-old went 2-3 with a 5.89 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.

The Brooklyn native played his college baseball at Northeastern University in Boston, so his trade to the Red Sox makes this somewhat of a homecoming.

Adding Ottavino provides the Red Sox with some pitching depth entering the 2021 campaign, which is something they lacked in 2020.
