Bryan Reynolds and Jared Triolo each homered for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they were defeated 3-2 by the Toronto Blue Jays at LECOM Park on Thursday evening.
Reynolds’ solo home run in the fourth inning broke up a Blue Jays’ no-hit bid and got the Pirates (11-15-1) on the board after falling into a three-run deficit. It was Reynolds’ fourth homer of the spring.
It took until the bottom of the ninth inning for the Pirates to find the scoreboard again. Jared Triolo hit a solo shot to center to bring Pittsburgh within a run.
The Pirates had the tying run on first base with one out in the ninth but were unable to even the score.
The Blue Jays (12-12-2) tagged Bailey Falter for three runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the first inning. Justin Turner connected on a two-run homer to left. Two batters later, Kevin Kiermaier added a solo home run to right-center.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Bailey Falter allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out four batters.
- Roansy Contreras struck out three batters and allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. Perhaps most encouragingly, he didn’t walk a batter. Ryan Borucki also punched out three in a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
- Two players made their spring debuts for the Pirates. David Bednar struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief. Michael A. Taylor went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and manned center field.
- Andrew McCutchen (right field) played the field for the first time since May 30.
