Rockies activate All-Star SS Trevor Story for Marlins game

Two-time All-Star shortstop Trevor Story is back.

Ahead of Thursday's matchup at the Miami Marlins, the Colorado Rockies activated Story off the injured list. Per the official MLB website, Story is batting cleanup and also playing at his natural defensive position.

In a corresponding roster move, Colorado optioned infielder Alan Trejo to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Story went on the IL back on May 29 because of right elbow inflammation that first popped up during a loss to the New York Mets earlier that week. There was previously hope he could return for the start of the Miami series on Tuesday, but the rebuilding Rockies aren't competing for much as spring turns to summer and, thus, have no reason to rush him back and risk damaging his value on the trade market.

The 28-year-old batting .255 with five home runs and 23 RBI this season is playing out the final months of his contract and will almost certainly be sent to a contender by next month's trade deadline, even if the Rockies wait until after the All-Star Game that they're hosting at Coors Field on July 13 to complete such a transaction.

Colorado heads into Thursday evening at 25-37 and in fourth place in the National League West standings.
