Rockies agree to one-year extension with manager Bud Black

The most successful manager in Colorado Rockies history in terms of winning percentage isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Black began his MLB managerial career in 2007 with the San Diego Padres and stayed with the club for eight-plus seasons. Despite finishing 89-74 in his debut campaign in San Diego and 90-72 in 2010 — a season for which he won the NL Manager of the Year Award — the Friars failed to make the postseason during Black's time at the helm.

The now-64-year-old was fired by the Padres in June 2015 and hired by the Los Angeles Angels as a special assistant to the general manager in November of that year. The Rockies hired Black as their manager in November 2016.

The former left-handed pitcher and 1985 World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals helped lead Colorado to an 87-75 record in 2017 and its first playoff appearance in eight years, though the Rockies fell in the NL wild-card game to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rockies went 91-72 in 2018, finishing second in the NL West and earning another wild card, but they were swept in the NLDS by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Colorado has finished under .500 and missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, coming in fourth in the division each year as well. Black has a career 998-1,072 managerial record in the regular season and a 1-4 mark in the playoffs.
