Just a few days ago, Colorado Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia was demoted to Triple-A.  Colorado recalled Hunter Goodman to the 40-man roster. Toglia was in a severely deep slump. The team thought it would be best to get the most out of their other young prospects. The Rockies first baseman led the team with four home runs. However, through 47 at-bats, he only obtained five hits. Four of those hits were home runs, but regardless, Toglia had a horrendous .106 batting average.

Rockies First Baseman Must Prove His Worth

With Kris Bryant out with an injury on the 10-day IL and Toglia demoted, Rockies first baseman Elehuris Montero must step up for this struggling young team. It’s vital for the first baseman to play great and prove his worth to the franchise. It will be interesting to see if Montero can adapt his game to the Major League level and be successful for the Rockies. Montero has played in 22 out of the Rockies 26 games. In 73 at-bats, he recorded 17 hits with one home run and six runs with a .206 batting average. Last night, in Colorado’s comeback 10-9 win over their division rival San Diego Padres, Montero recorded his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. In addition to last night’s win, the Rockies first baseman has played well since the start of this series. He recorded his first three-hit game during Tuesday night’s win. In 11 at-bats against San Diego, Montero has put up four hits.

During the next stretch of games, the Rockies first baseman must prove his worth to the franchise. This team is desperately looking for answers. They need guys on the mound and in the starting lineup to step up. Colorado will face the Houston Astros in Mexico City. After that, they’ll face the Miami Marlins, who’ve had a rough stretch during the month of April. Montero can show that he’s made to be one of the guys who can help turn this team around.
