Rockies sign SS Jose Iglesias, signaling likely departure for Trevor Story

If it wasn't already understood that Trevor Story was leaving the Rockies, it now looks like Colorado has already found his replacement.

The Rockies signed shortstop José Iglesias, reported by Mike Rodriguez of Univision. Rodriguez reports that the deal is for one year and worth $5 million.

Iglesias, a sure-handed defensive whiz, figures to fill the role of shortstop on an everyday basis next season. That would likely signal an end to the Story era in Colorado, as the veteran shortstop was already expected to fetch a deal outside the Rockies' budget in free agency.

Iglesias brings a stable, veteran presence to the Colorado infield. He's always been seen as one of the top at his position with the glove but is more middle-of-the-pack offensively. He's capable of hitting for a decent average but rarely walks and has next to no power.

Last season, Iglesias split time between two teams. He began the year with the Angels, with whom he played 114 games and put together a line of .259/.295/.375 while scoring 57 runs. He was then released near the end of the year before signing on with the Red Sox, where he hit .356/.406/.508 over 23 games.

Iglesias was named to his lone All-Star Game in 2015, when he hit .300/.347/.370 with the Tigers. His numbers have not returned to those levels since, though, except for in 2020 when he hit .373/.400/.556 with the Orioles. That came during the pandemic-shortened season, however, as he logged just 150 plate appearances over 137 games.
