The Kansas City Royals came one step closer to finalizing their coaching staff for the 2023 season.

After hiring former Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager to replace Mike Matheny, the Royals have brought in a new pitching coach.

Brian Sweeney, who had been a coach with the Cleveland Guardians since 2018 and served in the role of bullpen coach since 2020, has been hired as the team’s new pitching coach.

Fans of the Royals seem pretty thrilled with this new hire.

On Twitter, one fan expressed excitement about the hire by calling it “a step in the right direction.”

The fan also pointed out that the Guardians have been “getting the most” out of several of their young pitchers.

This all has taken place with Sweeney in the bullpen coach role with the team.

The 48-year-old pitched four seasons in the Major Leagues, making his debut for the Seattle Mariners in 2003.

The right-hander joined the San Diego Padres in 2004 and appeared with the team again in 2006.

Sweeney returned to the Mariners in 2010, his final season in Major League Baseball.

Over his four-year career, Sweeney went 4-2 with a 3.38 ERA.

The Royals have several young pitchers who are set to make an impact on the team, including Brad Keller, Brady Singer, Kris Bubic, and Josh Staumont.

The team finished 67-95 and at the bottom of the American League Central division, 27 games behind the Guardians.

Royals fans are clearly excited about the addition of Sweeney and feel that he can bring a lot of positive change to the team.
