Sandy Alcantara is a strong contender for the NL Cy Young Award.

The Miami Marlins ace has the second-best ERA in the National League at 2.43.

He was an All-Star this season and has been an innings eater.

In addition to an impressive ERA, he’s 12-8 in 29 starts.

He also reached the 200-innings mark last night against the Philadelphia Phillies.

In doing so, Alcantara became the first pitcher in all of baseball this season to reach that mark.

It’s also the second time in his career he’s reached 200 or more innings, which makes him the second pitcher in Marlins history to reach that mark multiple times.

Marlins legend Dontrelle Willis was the first.

Alcantara Reaches Elite Mark

This is an impressive mark.

Even with the Marlins well out of postseason contention, Alcantara has been a workhorse.

He knows how to give a team innings when they need them the most.

That’s one of the main reasons he has such a good shot at winning the NL Cy Young Award.

He’s been dominant all season long and has been exactly what the Marlins have needed in their rotation.

If there’s one player the St. Louis Cardinals regret trading away, Alcantara would be the guy.

He came to Miami in the Marcell Ozuna trade and his been everything the Marlins could have expected him to be.

He’s been an ace and he’s been able to give the Marlins some much-needed innings coverage.

That’s what you want out of your ace.

You always want him to be dependable and able to take the ball in key spots, potentially reaching back for some more innings.

Alcantara has been that guy for the Marlins, and now we’ll see if his dependability can be rewarded with a Cy Young.
