PORT ST. LUCIE - Changes have officially been made.

According to Mets owner Steve Cohen, Sandy Alderson is no longer team president and will be serving in an advisory role. This transition was first announced back in September and has now been made official.

After serving as general manager from 2010-2018, Alderson returned to the Mets as team president after Cohen purchased the team from the Wilpons in late-2020. The initial plan was for Alderson to remain in this role for two years, which is how things played out.

Upon making the announcement of this transition last fall, the organization said Alderson would remain the team president until they found a replacement. However, Alderson has moved to an advisory role before the team hired a new president.

The Mets are believed to have been conducting interviews for the team president role, but have yet to fill the position. As Cohen indicated on Monday, the Mets could possibly leave the president position vacant for the entire 2023 season, but he did not rule out possibly making a hire.

The belief is that the team president candidates have business backgrounds, as opposed to baseball operations experience. The club prefers to have GM Billy Eppler run the baseball operations department.

With Alderson, 75, in an advisory position, Cohen has taken on a more active role with the team. As the billionaire owner revealed, he is now a part of weekly staff meetings.
