As the Chicago Cubs march toward the end of Spring Training, several players have impressed in the Cactus League action. On Thursday, Shota Imanaga put together another notable performance.

In his start against the Oakland Athletics, Imanaga struck out nine batters in 4.1 innings. It was an impressive outing for a newcomer the Cubs will heavily rely on this season.

With Jameson Taillon set to open the season on the injured list, the Cubs need Imanaga to bring stability to the rotation behind ace Justin Steele . Veteran Kyle Hendricks also figures to be in the mix, but it's unclear who will fill out the remaining two spots.

Manager Craig Counsell has no shortage of options for his staff. Javier Assad, Hayden Wesneski, and Jordan Wicks should all get looks this spring as the Cubs evaluate which arms will round out the rotation.

When the Cubs open the season on the road against the Texas Rangers, Imanaga will likely start the second game of that series. The North Siders could make an early-season statement by starting their season on a high note against the defending World Series champions.

So far this spring, Imanaga's strikeout numbers have been outstanding. Yes, it's only Spring Training, the Cubs should still be excited about the performance of one of their biggest offseason splashes.

Going into the winter, the Cubs had several needs to address. Marcus Stroman opted for free agency, leaving a void in the rotation. It's increasingly looking like the Cubs may have found their solution in Imanaga.

The Cubs' future is bright. If Thursday was any indication of what Imanaga will bring to the North Side, the excitement will only build.
