The Detroit Tigers will play the New York Yankees Friday evening at 6:35 p.m. ET at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.

Newly acquired pitcher Michael Lorenzen will make his first appearance in a Tigers uniform, receiving the start for the club. Lorenzen signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Tigers in December.

After pitching his first seven big league seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, Lorenzen signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels for 2022. Lorenzen pitched primarily out of the Reds bullpen from 2016 through 2021. He received a chance to pitch as a starter for the Angels and posted an 8-6 record and 4.24 ERA in 18 starts and 97.2 innings pitched in 2022.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will also make his 2023 debut Friday evening. Cole earned his fifth trip to the All-Star Game in 2022, logging a 13-8 record and 3.50 ERA in 33 starts and 200.2 innings pitched, while finishing ninth in American League Cy Young Award voting.
