Surprise team could pivot to free-agent ace Blake Snell

The New York Yankees are the only team known to have made an offer for Blake Snell. That could potentially change, though.

Former general manager Jim Bowden said on MLB Network that the Philadelphia Phillies could emerge as a suitor for Snell. However, that would depend on Zack Wheeler's demands during extension talks.

Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the two sides had begun discussing such a deal. An extension would make sense for both sides - Wheeler has thrived since joining the Phillies and is happy in Philadelphia. The Phillies would keep their ace as they look to contend into the future.

Snell would, according to Bowden, be a backup plan. The Phillies could have a rotation fronted by Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Snell for 2024 before Wheeler hits the market. Signing Snell would give the Phillies a formidable trio as they look to return to the postseason.

Such a decision would require a leap of faith from the Phillies. Wheeler has posted a 3.06 ERA and a 1.055 WHiP in his 629.1 innings since heading to Philadelphia, striking out 675 batters with 135 walks. The Phillies know exactly what they have in him. Snell, meanwhile, is a two-time Cy Young winner, but far less consistent. He has been stellar in those two seasons and middling at best in his other five years in the majors.

If the Phillies are going to make a move for Snell, they may need to act quickly. Bob Nightengale from US Today has reported that the Yankees are still interested, although they are waiting for his price to drop. Negotiations with Wheeler's representatives will need to move quickly for the Phillies to make a decision. Otherwise, they could end up with neither pitcher heading into 2025.

The Phillies could look to sign Blake Snell. It is a matter of price, both with Snell and Zack Wheeler.
