Update: 10:10 a.m. ET: Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times says that Diaz will get an MRI on Monday and that Diaz has been bothered by the groin for a few days.

He tweeted: #Rays Diaz said there is some pain in his left groin, which had been bothering him for a few days before he slipped today at 3B. Team is concerned enough that he will get an MRI on Monday

The Tampa Bay Rays' bad weekend in New York continued on Sunday afternoon as offensive catalyst Yandy Diaz left the game against the New York Yankees with a groin injury.

After the Rays lost each of the first two games of the series, this just adds insult to injury.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Times put the update out on Twitter:

"#Rays say Diaz left game due to left groin tightness."

Topkin also chronicled the play in question in a previous tweet:

Yandy Diaz out of game for #Rays. Slipped getting to 3B in top of 1st, and looked like something was uncomfortable in his legs, though he did later score on B. Lowe groundout

Diaz having to miss time would be a big loss for the Rays. He's been excellent atop the Rays order this season. He's hitting .321 through his first 140 at-bats with 10 home runs and 24 RBI. He was 1-1 on Sunday before exiting.

Lifetime, Diaz is a .281 hitter with 49 home runs and 222 RBI. He made his major league debut in 2017 with the Cleveland Guardians but came to Tampa in the 2019 season.

The Diaz news is the second bad piece of injury news that the Rays have gotten this week. Pitcher Drew Rasmussen was put on the 60-day injured list with a flexor injury and will be shut down for at least the next two months.

At the time of this posting, the Rays lead the Yankees 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
