Corey Seager had been established as a postseason superstar well before he joined the Texas Rangers, but the shortstop has only bolstered his resume with his performance so far this October.
Seager went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI in the Rangers' 11-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night. His performance at the plate helped Texas go up 3-1 in the series, putting the franchise one win away from its first-ever championship.
Tuesday also marked Seager's 77th career postseason appearance since he debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers at 21 years old in 2015. Coincidentally, that is the same number of playoff games that Hall of Fame right fielder Reggie Jackson – also known as Mr. October – appeared in across his career with the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and California Angels.
The comparison doesn't end there, either.
Seager now has 19 home runs in the playoffs, compared to Jackson's 18. Seager has also tied Jackson with 48 postseason RBI.
The efficiency numbers still lean Jackson's way for the time being, as the outfielder hit .278 with an .885 OPS in his playoff career. Seager owns a career .251 batting average and .855 OPS in the postseason.
Jackson won three World Series with the Athletics, plus two more with the Yankees, establishing himself as one of the best players of the 1970s in the process. He won World Series MVP in 1973 and 1977, with the latter being heralded as one of the greatest single-series performances in baseball history.
Seager, meanwhile, only has one ring under his belt at the moment. He won NLCS and World Series MVP in 2020.
Tommy John and hip surgeries cost Seager a shot at leading the Dodgers to the 2018 title, as they ultimately lost to the Boston Red Sox in his absence. He has a chance to make up for that with a victory over the Diamondbacks this week, however, considering his Rangers are sitting just one win away from immortality.
Seager is batting .306 with six home runs, 12 RBI, an 1.135 OPS and more walks than strikeouts in these playoffs. His batting average in the World Series has dipped to .235, but his 1.139 OPS is keeping him in contention to win MVP should Texas close things out.
Game 5 is scheduled to get underway at 8:03 p.m. ET on Wednesday. If the Diamondbacks are able to eke out a win, the series will head back to Arlington for Game 6 and a potential Game 7.
