The 2023 World Series Champion Texas Rangers (I’m never going to get tired of saying that!) had some excellent injury updates this week coming out of Surprise, Arizona!

Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer returned to camp after a few weeks back in Texas. He began Spring Training in Arizona with the rest of the club; however, he returned to Texas to continue his rehabilitation under the care of the team’s specialists. Dr. Drew Dossett, who performed Scherzer’s back surgery in December, gave final clearance for Scherzer to resume baseball activities in the coming days. He will begin his throwing program and start ramping up to rejoin the club. He is currently projected to return as early as the beginning of June. However, that could change if his recovery progresses more rapidly. He may be placed on the 60-day injured list; however, putting him on the 60-day IL could delay his early return. It remains to be seen what the club will decide.

Josh Jung

Josh Jung continues to recover from his early spring training calf injury. He began baseball activities on March 3rd and has been ramping up since. Reports are that he is no longer holding back on his swing and is taking live pitches from fellow teammates. He is expected to begin playing in exhibition games before Spring Training ends. The club is optimistic that Jung will be available for Opening Day.

Corey Seager

Bruce Bochy is much more optimistic that Corey Seager will return by Opening Day. Seager began swinging a bat and fielding ground balls on March 11th. It is anticipated that Seager will begin taking live batting practice by Monday. He may start appearing in B games by the end of the week and could appear in Cactus League play before the end of Spring Training.

Other Injuries

We’ve previously discussed the injuries of several other players. Justin Foscue has resumed playing after he had some discomfort following a Spring Training game. Nathaniel Lowe is still recovering from his oblique strain, and Opening Day remains questionable for him. Newcomer Tyler Mahle is ramping up his workouts and throwing program and is expected to return in late July. Jacob deGrom is progressing through his recovery and will likely return after the All-Star Break. Carson Coleman has been officially placed on the 60-day injured list and will likely return in July.
