The Texas Rangers have acquired utility player Jose Barrero off of waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. The Cuban native was out of minor league options, forcing the Reds to place him on waivers. His arrival will bolster a roster currently decimated by injury. The move comes shortly after a number of injuries across the Rangers’ infield.

By the Numbers

Barrero spent four years with the Reds slashing a .186/.242/.256. He has 415 at-bats across 139 games with 77 hits, 36 runs, 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 32 RBIs, nine stolen bases, 28 walks, 163 strikeouts, and an OPS of .497. This spring he has 10 at-bats across six games with the Cincinnati Reds. He is slashing a .200/.429/.600 with two hits, two runs, one double, one home run, one RBI, four walks, four strikeouts, and an OPS of 1.029. While he is listed as an infielder according to MLB.com, he has been active in the outfield this spring.

More Injury Updates

Bruce Bochy revealed today that Justin Foscue is going to be taking a few days off as he was experiencing some discomfort in his side. Bochy did go on to say that he felt fine today, but with Lowe’s current injury, they aren’t taking any chances. Additionally, pitcher Carson Coleman was also placed on the 60-day injured list. It is expected that Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, and Tyler Mahle will join him in the coming days.

Recap

Jose Barrero will be placed on the 40-man roster, which will now stand at 37 players. He will be welcomed backup provided he can get his bat going and his fielding percentages remain steady.
