With a Milwaukee Brewers loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday night, the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves punched their ticket to October for the fifth straight season.
The Braves beat the Washington Nationals by a final of 3-2 on Tuesday, reaching 93 wins on the season and remaining on pace with the Mets, who lead the NL East by a game.
However, after the game, there was no celebration.
According to Braves insider David O’Brien, manager Brian Snitker and his team were hoping that the Brewers would come back and beat the Mets so that the Braves could pull even with them.
That didn’t happen, so after the game, most Braves players left the ballpark, with a 12:20 p.m. Eastern Time start looming for the series finale.
Braves Clinch, But Don’t Celebrate
Without question, the Braves are happy to have reached the postseason again.
But they haven’t gotten where they want to go just yet.
Unfinished business remains, and that is to catch the Mets and ultimately pass them to take home their fifth straight division title.
The Braves know that their work isn’t finished yet.
There’s still a lot left to play for at this point.
There will also be a huge series between them and the Mets in the final weekend of the series, which could go a long way in deciding who comes out on top in the NL East.
The Braves still have a pretty good shot at taking the title, but they have yet to get through the Mets.
They’ll wrap up their series with the Nationals today and then head to Philadelphia for a crucial four-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.
We’ll see if they can catch the Mets.
