The San Diego Padres might have an opportunity to take a little bit of revenge on the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies, who snuck into the postseason and eliminated the Padres in the NLCS, are projected as the favorites to land free agent shortstop Trea Turner.

Turner hit .298 with 21 home runs and 100 RBI during the regular season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He headlines an elite class of free agent shortstops that also includes Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson, and Xander Bogaerts.

But even with the Phillies listed as the favorites for Turner, a team like the Padres cannot be counted out.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic noted that the Padres are currently looking for a shortstop, similarly to the Phillies.

Rosenthal reported that the Padres could potentially have a chance to outbid the defending National League champs for the star shortstop and perennial All-Star.

Turner’s History With The Padres

The Padres won 89 games this season and earned the second NL Wild Card, eliminating the New York Mets and the Dodgers to reach the NLCS.

What is interesting about Rosenthal’s report that the Padres could be in on Turner is that the 29-year-old was actually drafted by the Padres back in 2014 in the first round.

Turner was traded to the Washington Nationals in 2015 and made his debut with the team later that season.

The Nationals shipped him off to Los Angeles alongside Max Scherzer at the 2021 trade deadline.

But the Padres could take a little revenge on the Phillies if they outbid them for the star shortstop.
