The time 'Naked Gun' star Reggie Jackson actually met the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at the age of 96, ending her reign as the longest serving monarch in Britain.

That 70-year reign had a handful of crossovers into the sports and entertainment world, including the plot of the 1988 comedic classic "The Naked Gun."

The movie revolved around an evil plan to have a baseball player, under a spell of hypnosis, unknowingly assassinate a fictitious Queen of England during a game between the Seattle Mariners and California Angels.  That role was played by baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson who was at the tail end of his career when the movie was filmed. Jackson made a brief cameo appearance in the movie, said a single line, and was ultimately thwarted by Lt. Frank Drebin (played by Leslie Nielsen).

While the Queen in the movie was played by an actress, Jeannette Charles, Jackson had a chance to actually meet the real Queen Elizabeth three years later.

During the 1991 season, the Queen attended a baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics as a guest of President George H.W. Bush.  Jackson was in his first season as a member of the A's coaching staff and was among those that got an opportunity to meet the Queen.

The fun fact about this encounter: Jackson was the only member of the A's to remove his hat when meeting her. Guess he felt the need to make up for that encounter three years earlier.
