Today's day in Philadelphia Phillies history begins in 1980 in Game 5 of the World Series. With the series tied 2-2 after four games, the Phillies needed to come away with a victory while playing in Kansas City.

Philadelphia did just that, as in the ninth inning third baseman Mike Schmidt led off with an infield single while down by one run. Del Unser, the pinch hitter, drove Schmidt home with a double to right field. After a sacrifice bunt and a ground out for the next two batters, Unser found himself on third.

Manny Trillo hit a line drive that scored Unser for the Phillies to take the lead that they wouldn't relinquish enroute to a 4-3 victory.

In 1983, Philadelphia released Pete Rose. Despite the fact that the Phillies had a desire to have Rose back the following season, Rose did not want to see his playing time diminished. As such, he was granted his unconditional release and would end up playing for the Montreal Expos in 1984.

In 2009, there were more postseason success stories to talk about on the day. In Game 4 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Phillies were down 4-3. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jimmy Rollins doubled in two runs and walked off the game to bring the series to 3-1 in Philadelphia's favor.
