Tigers, OF Robbie Grossman agree to two-year, $10 million deal

The Detroit Tigers may have landed a new starting left fielder.

The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen, ESPN's Jeff Passan and MLB.com’s Jason Beck (h/t Matt Kelly) reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Tigers and outfielder Robbie Grossman have agreed to a two-year contract worth $10 million. Stavenhagen added that Grossman could also earn performance bonuses as part of the deal.

According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the Grossman agreement is Detroit's first multi-year signing since the 2015-16 offseason.

A switch-hitter who turned 31 years old in September, Grossman hit .241 with eight home runs, 23 RBI, 12 doubles and eight stolen bases in 51 games while with the Oakland Athletics during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He has recorded a career .350 OBP and could replace Christin Stewart in left field and the lineup.

In 36 games last season, Stewart hit .167 with three home runs and nine RBIs. As Petzold noted in late September, the Tigers demoted the 27-year-old to their alternate training site earlier that month. Tuesday's news suggests the club may be ready to move on from the once-promising prospect.
