Tigers' Spencer Turnbull to have Tommy John surgery

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull won't take the bump again this season and might miss the entire 2022 MLB campaign.

Hours ahead of Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers, Detroit manager AJ Hinch announced that Turnbull will undergo Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old hasn't pitched since a June 4 outing against the Chicago White Sox, and the official MLB website notes that tests revealed the right-hander is suffering from chronic damage in the elbow of his throwing arm.

Because of the timetable for recovering from this procedure, Turnbull will certainly miss the rest of this season and will likely be out through at least the bulk of next summer.

Turnbull tossed the eighth no-hitter in franchise history when he achieved the feat against the Seattle Mariners on May 18 but made only three more starts before he was placed on the injured list. He ends the season at 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA in nine starts and 50 innings.

The Tigers began Tuesday afternoon at 44-51 and 13.5 games back of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central standings.
