Right-hander Spencer Turnbull threw the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history as Detroit defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-0, Tuesday night.

Turnbull’s no-no is the fifth nine-inning no-hitter in MLB this year. The record in the Modern Era is seven in one season.

Turnbull struck out nine, including Mitch Haniger for the final out, and walked just two batters -- rookie Jarred Kelenic to lead off the fourth inning and José Marmolejos leading off the ninth -- in the 50th start of his career.

The 28-year-old led MLB in losses with 17 in 2019.

The Tigers got all the offense they needed on Jeimer Candelario's solo homer in the first inning off Justin Dunn (1-2). Candelario added an RBI groundout in the third inning, and Miguel Cabrera singled home a run in the eighth. Akil Baddoo and Jonathan Schoop contributed RBI singles in the ninth.

It’s the first Tigers no-hitter since Justin Verlander defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 9-0, on May 7, 2011.

Meanwhile, the Mariners have been no-hit twice this season and it’s only May 19th.
