The good news, Tony Gonsolin continues to recover from his early spring ankle sprain. The bad news, his recent live BP outing didn't look all that great. That's probably to be expected for a guy that's essentially re-starting his own spring training.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talked to reporters about Gonsolin's Wednesday live BP session that happened at Camelback Ranch. The message is mixed.

“It was okay. He got through it … which was the most important thing.“I don’t think he threw his best. But that’s to be expected given it’s the first time he faced hitters.”

Gonsolin was set to make his second appearance of the spring when he rolled and sprained his ankle during backfield drills at CBR. Before then he had made only one Cactus League appearance, tossing two innings against the Angels more than a month ago.

According to Roberts, the pitcher will throw another bullpen session this weekend, then face live hitters one more time before heading out on a minor league rehab assignment. In a best case scenario, he's back in the Dodger rotation by the end of April. But into May isn't out of the question.

For now, right-hander Michael Grove will continue to hold it down as the number five starter in the rotation.
