The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tony Gonsolin on the 60-day injured list on Friday to make room for Clayton Kershaw on the 40-man roster.

Kershaw’s one-year contract that includes a player option for 2025 was made official on the second day of Dodgers pitchers and catchers workouts at Camelback Ranch. Kershaw can reportedly earn up to $12 million and an additional $10 million if he picks up his option.

As for Gonsolin, he’s on the mend from last year’s season-ending Tommy John surgery. The right-hander did not make his season debut until May due to a left ankle sprain but was effective upon his return.

Gonsolin posted a 1.95 ERA in 32.1 innings, which was a continuation of a strong 2022 campaign. However, he then regressed to the tune of a 5.82 ERA in June.

The 29-year-old finished the 2023 season 8-5 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 20 starts. Over parts of five seasons with the Dodgers, Gonsolin owns a career 34-11 record, 3.19 ERA, 3.99 FIP and 1.05 WHIP in 79 games (71 starts).

Thursday was the first day the Dodgers could begin utilizing the 60-day IL as they opened camp for Spring Training. They are ahead of most other teams due to starting the 2024 season with the Seoul Series against the San Diego Padres from March 20-21.

The team also put Dustin May on the 60-day IL, while Kershaw and pitching prospect Nick Frasso are candidates to go on the list as well.

Tony Gonsolin ‘taking it slow’ with rehab from Tommy John surgery

Gonsolin is expected to miss all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he provided an update on his rehab during the Dodgers Love L.A. Community Tour.

“It’s good,” Gonsolin said. “I started my throwing-ish progression, started this week. So just taking it slow.”
