Former Oakland A's reliever Trevor May has become something of a cult hero among the team's faithful fan base after he told owner John Fisher to "sell the team" during his retirement announcement. To show their appreciation for sticking up for them, A's fan group the Oakland 68's sent May a special gift.
That's right, it's a "SELL" shirt signed by members of the 68's. The shirt is filled with sentiments like "#selltheteam" and "you are forever Oakland."
It should also be noted that in a recent clip of the former reliever talking about the biggest accomplishment of his life, he is wearing an Oakland 68's hat. This particular cap has an elephant that has donned a "SELL" bandana.
The A's didn't have a good season in 2023, going 50-112 while Fisher decided to rip the team out of the community for a mirage he's chasing in the Las Vegas desert. Still, the fans of this team and in this city are showing that they care, and that they appreciate the people that take a minute to have just a little empathy.
Too often A's fans are greeted with jeers online and people that don't know the entire situation blaming the fan base for the team planning to leave town. If there is one thing that most people in the know can agree upon, it's that the potential relocation is not the fan's fault. Fisher had big dreams and aspirations for building at Howard Terminal, but when he remembered he'd have to pay for the project, he panicked.
Trevor May closed out both of the "reverse boycott" games in Oakland this season, which gave the fans in the stands a reason to cheer in this dismal year. Add that to his words to Fisher, and May will forever be welcomed in the city of Oakland.
