Twins reportedly offered Byron Buxton extension worth more than $70 million

The Minnesota Twins have offered outfielder Byron Buxton a long-term extension worth more than $70 million, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. The deal reportedly includes escalators and incentives that would increase the total value of the contract.

If an agreement isn't reached, the Twins will likely trade the 27-year-old by this month's deadline or in the offseason, Rosenthal adds.

Buxton is set to be a free agent after the 2022 season. He was drafted by the Twins in 2012 and made his Major League Baseball debut in 2015.

The former Gold Glove winner is currently on the injured list with a fractured left hand. He suffered the injury last month after being hit by a pitch.

Buxton, who is often injured, has played more than 100 games in a season just once in his seven-year career. In 27 games this season, he's hitting .369/.409/.767 with 10 home runs and 19 RBI.

The Twins are fourth in the AL Central with a 39-50 record and appear to be sellers at the trade deadline in two weeks. If they move Buxton, the Twins will likely receive a haul for the outfielder despite his injury history.

Nelson Cruz, Jose Berrios, Josh Donaldson and Andrelton Simmons are also among the players Minnesota could trade this season.
